The story of The Address starts in 1884; Sara Smythe is working as a housekeeper at a posh hotel in London. One day, she rescues a young girl who is standing in front of the open window and almost falls out of it, as she has sneaked out of the view of her nanny.
The father of the little girl, Theo Camden. is so delighted by this, that he offers her to come with his family to New York to work as a managing housekeeper in the newly built Dakota building. Slowly on though, something more starts to happen between her and the married Theo, untill the point that she is expecting a baby. Suddenly she starts feeling very off and is accused of stealing an expensive necklace from Mrs. Camden, as it was found in one of her drawers. She is sent of to the police and later on to an island where there is an institution for the insane. But Sarah never stole the necklace, but she is just seen as a crazy woman, and she doesn't get any help. Until a female journalist goes undercover and publishes a story about the institution and Sara is suddenly free again, that is the start though of a very tragic and dramatic ending of the book.
New York 1985: Bailey Camden is just out of rehab and starting all over again as an interior designer. She is the granddaughter of ward of Theo Camden and wants to know more about his history. The only thing she knows so far is that Theo was stabbed to death by a madwoman named Sara Smythe She gets the chance to work with her cousin Melinda Camden on her apartment. The absence of a genetic connection means Bailey won't see a dime of the Camden family's substantial estate. Instead, her -cousin- Melinda--Camden's biological great-granddaughter--will inherit almost everything. But now at least she has a job. But then she discovers something in the basement of the Dakota and that t could turn everything she thought she knew about Theodore Camden, and the woman who killed him, on its head.
This is one of those books where its hard to decide where to start with your review. There is happening so much in this book! First of all, I loved every part of it. It is beautifully written and the storyline just blew me away!!! I love historical fiction like this, these type of books is just why I like this genre so much! And beside that it was also set in New York City, which is one of my favorite book settings! The story of Sara starts of very promising but everything goes wrong for her. You get the feeling though (spoiler alert!) that something or someone is setting her up. In the end you get the answer if this is what actually happening. There where quite some brilliant twists and turns in the story of Sara, which made it very entertaining to read.
Bailey's character was less interesting, and her storyline wasn't as fast and entertaining as that of Sara, it added to the story though as it helped unravel the last secrets of Sara and Theo' and what happened on that moment of Theo's death, which is not what you would expect. It was an outstanding ending though!!
Overall an outstanding good read which I highly recommend reading!!!
