Catch the Light by Kate Sweeney

Publisher: PenguinTeen
Publication date: November 9th 2021
Pages: 352

Marigold has recently lost her father due to cancer. With her mom and younger sister Bea, she moves from California to upstate New York to live with her mom's sister El. She now has to adjust to her new life and her new high school, and has to miss her best friend Nora and her boyfriend Bennett.

It is difficult for her to get around her new life, especially because she misses her dad. But slowly on, she meets new people and friends in her high school, while she also tries to stay in touch on facetime with Nora and Bennett. She meets Jesse, who is just as into photography as she is, and this friendship slowly grows into more then a friendship. But what will she tell Bennett, or are things between them not that going well already for a while, as he seems more distant in behaviour now they are so far apart? She has to decide what she wants in her new life, and which people are having a place in it and who not anymore, and she learns a lot about herself, her friends and family, and how to move on from the loss of her dad without forgetting him..

Altough it was  a bit slow at some points and not having much plot twists, I thought this was a beautifully written book!! It reminded me a bit of the style of the books of Sarah Dessen, and I think fans of her books will certainly like this book by Kate Sweeney. The story was moving and altough it deals with the loss of a parent, it was not too heavy or tragic to read. It was interesting and moving to read how Marigold tried to pick up and make sense of her life again after the loss of her father and move to upstate New York. Everything is different then in sunny California. But the romance between her and Jesse is very cute and I loved how she tried to stay in touch like a good friend with her best friends back home.

Overall, this is a very good new YA novel that comes out this november, not a fast paced thrilling one, but one with a slower and deeper story.
