Amy is living with her Chinese parents in Queens, New York. She has an older sister, Sylvie, who lives in New York too but is currently on a visit to family in The Netehrlands with her aunt and uncle. One day, she gets a call from her nephew if Sylvie has arrived with them in New York yet, because the family in the Netherlands can't reach her. Amy and her family don't know anything about Sylvie having plans to travel to them in New York. After many frantic calls to Sylvie to find out about her whereabouts, Sylvie soon is seriously considered missing. After Sylvie's New York apartment, she finds out that her husband has left and tries to get answers from him, but he doesn't seem to know anything or is he, but not telling her?
Sylvie travels to the Netherlands to find out where Sylvie is, and there she finds out what Sylvie did in the days and weeks before she went missing. And she finds out a lot of family secrets that are linked to her dissappearance in the end..and that Sylvie's live, who was always the smartest and the perfect one in the family, wasn't so perfect at all...
After having read the two amazing previous books of Jean Kwok, I was looking forward to read her newest book. Did it live up my expectations? Totally!
First of all, the book is written in the Jean Kwok unique style of writing, which already makes this book outstanding. Secondly, the plot and storyline is fantastic. Third; the author has made this book a great combination between New York and The Netherlands, with also the Chinese culture of the families of Amy and Sylvie, and as Jean lives in The Netherlands (just like me) she mixes in everyday aspects of Dutch life, like cycling, house interiors, and typically Dutch food in to the story, which was just so original. It really added something extra to the book. What I also liked was that the author choose to let the chapters alternate between Amy and Sylvie and their mom, And the unraveling and conclusion of Sylvie's dissappearance was very good, beforehand the author really does a great job to not give away to many secrets until the moment where Sylvie dissappearance takes a turn for the good or bad. (I will leave that in the middle here.. ;) )
So overall if you loved Jean Kwok's previous books, or if you don't and are just in for a new and very good book to read, this is the new one to choose!!
