Sophie Orenstein and Peter Rosenthal have been best friends since forever. Sophie's dream is to become a professional choreographer, and she trains hard in the dance team that she is in, while Peter wants to become a pianist. Sophie has a secret crush on Peter, why Peter still isn't sure if he is more into boys then girls.
Peter has a kidney illness, and needs a new kidney. When they find out that Sophie is a match, she gives him a kidney.
But they didn't expect what happens after the kidney transplant. Their friendship grows more distant, as Sophie is quite busy with dance team and family obligations, Peter dives into all the oppurtunities he now has because he feels stronger after the transplant.Andhe’s now drawn to Chase, the guitarist in a band that happens to be looking for a keyboardist. Meanwhile, Sophie misses her friendship with Peter the way it was, and wonders if things will ever get back to normal, as she doesn't know who she is without him.
Peter feels indebted to her because she gave him a kidney, and his health back. Then one night something happens that truly twists and turns their friendship, and they have to figure out if this is worth fighting for..
I have mixed feelings about this book. Let's start with the positive points of it; first of all, as I am a kidney patient myself, I loved it that there is finally a YA book that features a kidney patient. Hats off to the author for doing this. Altough it doesn't go into depth about everything that comes with a kidney illness it was a good red line during the first part of the book. Then the focus was more on the changed friendship between Sophie and Peter and Peter's beginning relationship with Chase. What happens in that part was okay, but it didn't kept me interested as a reader, and it wasn't anything very new that didn't happen in many other YA books.
So overall this is an okay read, but nothing new or special.
