It's just been Avery and her mom since her parents divorced when she was two years old. Normally, she only now hears from her estranged father who lives in California, on her birthday or holidays. Out of the blue she receives an email from him one day, where he announces that he is going to move back to New York with his soon-to-be new wife and her three new stepsisters.
When the evening arrived that she will meet them, she meets some very snobby girls in the bathroom of the restaurant where they meet up, who make fun of Avery. The shock is even greater when later on her dad introduces her to her new stepsisters, who are the same girls! Oh no! This is a nightmare!
The first meetings at her dad's new house where she gets her own room, are not going well. The girls are looking down on her, and want nothing to do with her and her vintage clothing and crafts but later on, they get a task to complete together, as they are all going to be bridesmaids in the wedding of her dad and their mom. They have asked the girls to come up with something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. The perfect chance for Avery to show her creativity and to show that she is above the arrogance of the girls, as there is no other possibility then working together on this. But then a series of disasters happen; from spilling a chocolate-y drink on a very expensive dress in a dressing room when they go dress shopping, to turning her future step-mother’s hair bright blue days before the wedding. Will it be a happily ever after wedding?
This was a very cute read for young girls. Altough the plot was quite thin, I enjoyed it mostly. Girls who like The Parent Trap with an evil stepmother will certainly like the storyline of this book, only instead of one stepmom there are three mean stepsisters here. The author did a great job though making the stepsisters more than just mean: she also potrayed why they acted that way, as later on the reader learns that all the girls have their issues and thoughts about the wedding, and are not hating Avery as a person.
Overall a very cute and fun new book in the Aladdin M!X imprint, which is I think one of the very best imprints there is for books for tween girls.
