Zoe's dodging cheerleaders who want her and Olivia to go out for the squad, and Olivia's got a crush on Calvin Taylor, who Zoe can't stand. But then one day Olivia is not at school because she has a fever that doesn't go away. It gets worse and then the day comes that Zoe get's a call from Olivia with the bad news: Olivia has leukemia.Suddenly, not being able to dance is the least of their problems.
The one thing that keeps Zoe moving forward is knowing that Olivia will beat this thing, and everything will go back to the way it was before. It has to. Because the alternative is too terrifying for Zoe to even imagine.
I was very moved by this gripping new book by the fantastic Melissa Kantor. I try to read all her books So I was excited to get the chance to review Maybe One Day. I hadn't read the synopsis first as I like to be surprised by the story, when I don't know what to expect. So I didn't expected the serious topic the book get's quite soon in the story. The first parst is part where Zoe and Olivia are just to normal teens, doing everyday things and busy with school and ballet, then the horrible illness kicks in. I felt very sad for Zoe and Olivia what they had to deal with. In my personal life I recently lost a family member due to cancer, so this book really moved me a lot. I think Melissa Kantor did a fantastic and amazing job making Olivia's situation realistic, without making the story to heavy, or scary for young readers. The book reminded me a littlebit of The F-It List by Julie Halpern, also a story about two young girls, best friends, and with this horrible illnes as the main topic, but Maybe One Day has a more serious undertone. I highly recommend this emotional and gripping, and more serious YA novel by the fabulous author Melissa Kantor.
