It is 1900 en de dangerous streets of London's East End are not a common environment for a real lady like doctor India Selwyn Jones. India is an outsider, smart and she knows what she wants. She is one of the first female doctors and determined to open a clinic in this poor neighbourhood without good medical facilities. It is here that India meets one of the most notorious gangsters of London: Sid Malone, a man with many enemies.

Malone is the opposite of everything India's cool aristocratic fiancee Freddy Lyton, a rising star on the political stagem who needs India's money for his career. India and Malone are falling in love, and India is very intrigued by his mysterious past. During the story, we also meet Fiona and Joe Finnegan, who readers of Jennifer Donnely's previous book The Tea Rose instantly know. Fiona is Sid's sister and the stories of India, Fiona and Joe are weaven together in this second book in this ''..Rose'' trilogy.

The Winter Rose brings the beginning of the turbulent 20th Century alive again, again Jennifer Donnely has created a masterpiece with this richly detailed story. I loved The Tea Rose, so I was excited to find out what happened next to Fiona and Joe Finnegan. India's live was just as impressing as it was very hard for her to be one of the first female doctors and how she had to pass many obstacles on this way. The Winter Rose is just a book you must have read if you love historical fiction and are a fan of Jennifer Donnely's books. Her books just never dissapoint, looking forward for the third installment in this series, The Wild Rose!
