Maisie Fernandez wants to be one of the popular girls in her high school, because she is done with all the bullying about her size and looks. When she is partnered up with popular guy Jesse Santos in science class, she really starts to like him and hopes he likes her too.
Then she gets an idea. She sets up a fake social media profile. She names her new online self Sienna, and steals a picture of the profile of the daughter of one of her mom's coworkers who she rarely knows. Here she is everything she isn't in real life, popular and pretty, and she starts talking to Jesse, while he doesn't even know this Sienna, so he maybe starts to like her. But she also wants, very Mean Girls style to take the popular girls down. How she will connect the dots between her online and real life is a care for later.
At first, nothing really noteworthy happens, but then her mom announces that a coworker from Denver and her daughter will visit them, and before she knows it, the real girl who she used the pictures from, the real Sienna named Claire is standing in front of her, things get out of hand very fast and Maisie is in danger of being exposed..
As in all her other books, social media and the dangers of it plays a red line in this book by Donna Cooner. In this book a girl misuses it completely and has to pay the price of it.
The book is well written, and it truly is entertaining to see what happens when Maisie is posing as Sienna online and how it reflects in the real high school world. That it is a little sad she chooses to do this is obvious. The peer pressure becomes too much for her and she totally wants to be in the popular crowd, but are these popular girls so perfect inside as they seem on the outside, or are they the fake ones? The unraveling and the danger of Maisie being exposed was a nice entertaining end of the book, and I really liked how it was wrapped up.
So overall this is a good book, even as the previous ones, by Donna Cooner, and I am looking forward to read and review her newest book Offline!!
