Ever Wong is a teenage girl from Ohio. who after the summer is planning to go to a dance academy, while her parents insist on going to medical school. But her summer plans are falling apart when her parents announce they are sending her to Taiwan to immerge in a language and culture program, Chien Tan, to learn more about her Taiwanese background and to learn Mandarin.
What her parents don't know is that the program actually is nicknamed Loveboat, as there are a lot of romances starting there and the students more into clubbing and drinking than calligraphy.Under the students, Chien Tan is known for endless summer hook-ups, counselors turning a blind eye, and never ending nightlife parties. Not too mention, the cute guy that Every is very interested in getting to know
Ever is hestitant to go, but when she arrives at the airport in Taipei, she starts to feel like she is in the right place at the right time, as she is now not under the strict watchfull eye of her parents anymore, and this gives her the freedom to go out and to follow a dance class that leads to an end performance. But then her dad all of a sudden stands right before her on the night of the performance...
I really liked the storyline of this book and how the characters and the storyline developed and how this resulted in a good and moving end.
There aren't that many YA novels set in Taiwan, so this makes it already an original and exciting background to the story. The story of Ever, and the expectations that her traditional parents have, and how she breaks free and makes some great self-development during her stay in Taiwan was very entertaining to read. The love triangle was also cute and entertaining, it started slow and then it took off for real!
So overall, I truly enjoyed this new book by debut author Abigail Hing Weng, and I truly hope there will be more good and exciting books by her coming out in the future!!
