Life, After by Sara Darer Littman

Life is getting more and more difficult in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Dani and her family are facing though times: the family is relying on charity for food and clothes, and her aunt and unborn cousin are killed in a terrorist bombing in the AMIA building in Buenos Aires. Many of her Jewish day-school classmates are leaving for Israel and the United States to get a better life.

Because of the ensuing political upheaval, economic hardship, and emotional toll, Dani's family moves to the U.S. too. Her boyfriend Roberto removed a few months earlier to Miami, while Dani's family will go to a little town in upstate New York.

Dani again is facing hard times, altough its now to adjust to the American way of life and the fact that her classmates, in particular Jessica. is looking down on her because she wears clothes that came from the Jewish charity, and it are the clothes from that particular girl! But then Dani stands up for Jessica's brother Jon, who has Asperger Syndrome and is bullied. From then on Jessica is treating Dani different and they become friends, and maybe they have more in common, when Jessica tells Dani that her father was killed in the attacks on 9/11..

I was blown away by Life, After. It was filled with lots of grief, but I loved to read how Dani and her family tried to cope with that. It was beautiful and very impressing to read, altough it was filled with issues as terrorism, immigration, poverty, autism spectrum disorders, depression, it wasn't a heavy read. I loved the character of Dani and her sister Sari, and felt sad for her dad, but luckily he picked up living his life again. As I maybe have mentioned before, I love immigration stories and books between cultures, so Life, After was just the perfect book which I highly recommend!!!

  1. I adored this book too! I read it earlier this year and have been disappointed it hasn't had more buzz in the blogosphere. I'm glad to hear you chime in about it!
