Before We Were Free by Julia Alvarez

Anita de la Torre is a twelve year old girl, living in a compound with her family in the Dominican Republic in the 1960, when general Trujillo is ruling the country for thirty years. by her twelfth birthday in 1960, most of her relatives have immigrated to the United States, her Tío Toni has disappeared, and the secret police terrorize her family for their suspected opposition of the country’s dictator. Bit by bit, ANita discovers that her father is involved in a plot to make dictator Trujillo dissappear and to free the country. When he gets caught by the ploice, Anita and her mom aren't sure of their lives and safety anymore..

I wanted to read this book for a long time, so I was excited when I found the Dutch edition of it in my library. This was the first time I read a book by Julia Alvarez and I was very impressed by it. I didn't know anything about the subject, Dominican Republic before reading it (ofcourse I have read about similar situations in Latin America)
Another book and author to add to my always growing list of multicultural YA, loved it!
