Call me Kate:Meeting the Molly Maguires by Molly Roe

Synopsis: Coming of age amidst the seething unrest of the Civil War era, feisty fourteen-year-old Katie McCafferty infiltrates the Molly Maguires, a secret Irish organization, to rescue a lifelong friend. Under the guise of Dominick, a draft resister, Katie volunteers for a dangerous mission in hopes of preventing bloodshed. Katie risks job, family, and ultimately her very life to intervene. A series of tragedies challenge Katie's strength and ingenuity, and she faces a crisis of conscience. Can she balance her sense of justice with the law?

I really liked this book. It was historical young adult fiction in the same style of the books by author Ann Rinaldi and of a book I also really loved: Annie Between the States by L.M. Elliott. The plot about Katie was very stunning and she was just so brave!
It really gives a good view in how it was to live as a young girl during the Civil War and during some horrible mine accidents. Recommended read if you are into historical fiction and in specific the Civil War period.

  3. I was very disappointed with this book. The history in it is wrong. The "Molly Maguires" are a fiction made up by cruel mine owners. They were union men framed and Jack Kehoe was pardoned by the governor of PA Milton Shapp a hundred years later. The mine owners did the killing. Why don't people know their own history?
