Dearest New York by Deirdre Gartner is a book that is a love letter to the Big Apple. A charming and elegant book in which the author takes your hand and leads you to her favorite places in the city. She describes ever part of Manhattan, from midtown, to Greenwich Village, Central Park and the Upper East and West side, and the Lower East side to name a few. In every short neighborhood part she describes in which streets you find the best shops, coffee, bookstores and bakeries, beside some historical facts and illustrations and pictures.
The book has an elegant and charming feel to it, but is it really something different then a regular NYC travel guide? Not really. Beside the elegant look there is nothing really new to find in the NYC tours in the book. Mostly the standard touristy things like Magnolia Bakery, where you can find Carrie Bradshaw's house, the usual Central Park information, the usual bookstores we have seen in many other guides. The book feels like a long summing up of all the parts and neighborhoods of Manhattan, in just a few sentences without any more depth to it. I think some more depth had really added some more interesting things in this book, and not the usual tourist traps everyone already knows for long. The book looks promising, but I truly expected more from it.
