This is a review of an ebook that I bought
In 2020, Andria Lo and Valerie Luu's beautiful book Chinatown Pretty was published. The book is full of lively pictures of the stylish seniors of various Chinatown across the USA and Canada; San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, and Vancouver.
Andria Lo and Valerie Luu have been interviewing and photographing Chinatown's most fashionable elders on their blog and Instagram, Chinatown Pretty, since 2014, and the book took six years to make. And that shows off, the content of the book is put together with the best care The interviews about the stylish outfits are original, beautiful and moving. The seniors are very creative in their outfits and it is very interesting to read where it came from and the stories behind the outfits, which also tells about their values and their immigration journeys. Their styles are a mix of modern and vintage, high and low, handmade and store bought clothing. It feels like you get to the know the seniors of the Chinatowns a little, and it feels like they could be your grandma or grandpa.
The book shows that even when you're a senior, life doesn't slowly stops. The seniors in this book are very active, and full of life, joy and creativity, even when their personal situation isn't easy.
This book is a celebration of Chinese-American culture, fashion, and the history of Chinatowns, and as a reader, you can only find deep respect for the seniors of Chinatown. And for the authors of this unique, one of a kind, jewel of a book!!
