Gemma Huang recently moved from Illinois to Los Angeles, where she starts living with three other roommates. She doesn't want to go to college anymore, instead she wants to pursue a career in acting. After a serie of auditions she lands a leading role in a new movie of Madame Butterfly, which is to be filmed in Beijing.
Her mother always warned her though; don't ever go to China. But why? Is there something her mother has to hide?
When she lands in Beijing, she is met by hundreds of people and a lot of press photographers. Why? She isn't famous or anything.?? Soon enough she finds out that she might be the twin of one of the most famous Weibo stars in Beijing, Alyssa. Through Alyssa she finds, discovers and unravels a lot of other things beside the filming about her own family, and why her mother warned her never to go to China. It seems that there are a lot of secrets and ancient and present time family feuds her parents never told her about or wanted to protect her from, and it seems that Gemma is an heiress, apparently..
Wow, this book absolutely surprised me! I loved the cover, it made me curious for the story itself. And oh, it was really good. It might that you expect just a fluffy YA comedy or romance or something by the cover, but this totally isn't the case.
This book lets you travel to Beijing, China in the story. The author knows where she writes about, that is very clear when you read the book!! You totally see Beijing before you as a reader in all the scenes because it is potrayed so well with all the sights, sounds and flavours
The story of Gemma, her lead movie role and the secrets she finds out about her family's past, is just very good. You get to feel how it is on a movie set (and quite a cool one in Beijing) and everything that comes with it. Gemma also finds out that her family history is linked to important events in China's history. And there is also room for some romance in everything between. So there is a lof of exciting stuff happening in this rollercoaster of a book, that I truly recommend reading!!
